Back to Basics | New Hair + Summer Slim Down Series

Although it's summer and most gals like to lighten up their hair, it's time for me to head back to the dark side....being a brunette that is ;D

My hair needed some major TLC after surviving a lot of sun and highlighting with only more to come. I darkened my hair a bit but still have those blonde highlights perfect for summer!

Now that I am back at home, I am in MAJOR need of focusing on working out and getting my body back in shape for the summer.

Do you ever feel like you just completely lost touch with your routine or body? That's how I feel at the moment and definitely gained a few pounds after eating my way through Europe.

Thankfully, I am more motivated than ever to work off those pounds :D

As of late, I have started getting back into the gym and will be reviewing Skinny Teatox and see if it matches up to all its de-bloating and cleansing glory!

Are you ready for my Summer Slim Down Series?

All Things Fitness: Beginner's Guide to Working Out & Getting Healthy

Chubby Kimmy all the way to the right. Oye.

Disclaimer: I am in no way a nutritionist or fitness trainer....yet ;)

I have been continuously asked about my diet
and fitness regimen or how I stay fit.
Every time I get asked this question I am completely flattered because that means whatever I've been doing is working.

As I've mentioned in my previous post about embracing your body type, I was not active and very self-conscious about my body in high school and even before then. I began to take more interest in working out and being conscious of what I was consuming. I am continuously trying to improve my body and the way I eat and it's a continuous journey. My goal is to become a fitness instructor very soon so then I can actually help others achieve their fitness goals and accomplish mine.

Do you feel like you need a change? Lose some weight so you can feel better in your clothes? Want to start working towards a more fit you? Or maybe you want to just start living a healthier lifestyle?

I'd like to help you get started on that journey and I know when you do, you will definitely see and feel the difference in your body and overall mood! It's never to late to create new habits or change your life.

So how do you begin?

Well, I am going to share with you some of my personal tips on:
nutrition, motivation, and working out.
All simple and very easy to begin changing and incorporating into your daily routine!

Nutrition

I hate the word diet. It's a lifestyle change. I don't believe in those crazy diets have you pretty much drinking water and air. You need food. Food is by far the most important factor in determining what your body will look like. Have you ever heard of the phrase: abs are made in the kitchen? Very true. I know it must be overwhelming with all the latest diet trends or information on what's best for you and what will help you lose weight and such but relax. Just start simple!
  • Drink solely water and lots of it. Eat your calories, don't drink them. The more water you consume the less dehydrated and bloated you will feel. Water when you wake up. Water when you eat. Water when you are working out. Water when you think you are hungry. Sometimes your body is just dehydrated and not hungry.
  • Get rid of all bad processed foods from your eating habits. I enjoy unhealthy foods from time to time but I cannot and will not feed myself this on the daily. Love bread? Decrease your intake and stay far away from white! Anything bleached is not good for your health or fitness goals. Stick to whole grain, multi grain at best or whole wheat. Fried foods like fries or even fried plantains? Indulge on occasion but not everyday. Not good for your skin or your future abs. Cookies, milkshakes, and baked goods? Find a healthier alternative to satisfy that sweet tooth. All that sugar will go straight to your tummy and have you feeling lagged.
  • Eat more greens and fruits. Although I am a vegetarian and love my greens, eating fresh greens and fruits will do wonders for your body and your skin! I have a love affair with avocados and eat almost an entire one a day. Great for your skin and it is a healthy fat that your body will be able to burn. Make your plate as colorful as possible. More vegetables than carbs. Stick to dark greens like spinach. The darker the green, the better it is for you so I've been told.
  • Incorporate smoothies. I am not talking about a smoothie with chocolate and vanilla with some ice cream and a whole lot of caramel. No no. A smoothie will make your life easier because it is a lot faster to prepare when you need a pick me up or to feel yourself after a hard workout. You can make endless recipes for any craving you may have. Pinterest is loaded with them and I have plenty on my Pinterest boards you should check out. Check my last fitness post for some delicious smoothie recipes here!
  • Go meatless for a day or two. No, I am not trying to convert you into vegetarianism. It is great to switch up your diet and also incorporate different foods. You can also substitute meat with more fish! Fish is filled with great nutrients and full of protein. My taste buds changed completely once I stopped eating meat. Meat is great for you and has nutrients that you definitely need but it is not the only source of getting them. I always found myself feeling very full and not in a good way when I did eat meat years ago. Try something new and who knows maybe you will turn into a meat-less eater!

Motivation

You need a goal or end in mind. Maybe it's a fitter you or you want a 6-pack. Motivation is key to maintaining this goal and also keeping you on track.
  • Cut out or type of your favorite quotes. If you walk into my room at home, I have inspirational words taped up near my mirror so I can see them everyday. I have tons of them pinned on my Pinterest board and like to set them as my iPhone background or even post them on Instagram to motivate myself and others.
  • Find someone who motivates you. I am not saying be exactly like them at all. Who has the lifestyle or even body type that you want or hope to attain? I am inspired by women of my body type who look absolutely fit and beautiful: Nicole Mejia, Jennifer Lopez, and Kim K (she's kind of a stretch but still appreciate her curvy lifestyle).
  • Find images that motivate you or show your end goal. I like to print out pictures of a 4-pack or of a girl running a marathon. I'm a very visual person and need to see what I want in front of me. Ultimately, you want to be able to visualize your end goal. Draw it out if you can!

Working Out

The combination of healthy foods and implementing a workout regimen will definitely impact your life completely. If you've never worked out before or don't really know how to go about it, start slow. As a society, we want everything instantaneously including a great body. Good things take time and that definitely relates to the results of a living a healthier lifestyle.
  • Workout at least 4 to 5 times a week. You do not need to be stressing yourself out to fit a workout in. You also don't need to be at the gym for an hour. You need to create a habit of working out so that you can burn what you eat and also keep your body active and healthy. You can workout a lot harder in 15 minutes than someone who has been at the gym for an hour. If something is important to you, you will make time.
  • Try different things. Do not be afraid of trying new workouts because you'll look stupid or don't know how to do it. Try it all! Pilates, cycling, swimming, running, barre classes. Do it all. Your body will thank you for challenging it. If you keep doing the same things, you'll get the same results. Want to see a change in your body? Try something new.
  • Don't be afraid of weights (especially if you are a girl). So, there is this misconception that if you start lifting you'll turn in to a body builder or some female version of the Rock. Um, no. I mean if you train to do that yes, but for a girl just trying to tone up and lose some weight you won't. Muscles weighs more than fat and the more muscle you have the better! Sometimes you see your body weight fluctuate on the scale but it could just be the increase in muscle you've attained. Two people of the same body weight can look completely different because of the muscle in their body. Want a fitter and bigger booty? Squat with weights. A nice fit back? Use some weights. Weights will help challenge you and also increase your strength and stamina overall.
  • Make an awesome workout playlist. You need some good tunes to keep you going with whatever work out you decide to do. Go on Spotify and search through playlists or create your own! I love to change up my playlists and also incorporate fun, EDM, pop, rap infused playlists. I'll definitely share my latest faves soon <3

If you are still reading this, I applaud you for deciding to make a change and also for reading all of this.
You da bomb.

Summer is around the corner, so let's get to it.

All Things Fitness: Get Unhealthy With Me

Yes, I know the title seems a bit dramatic. Plus, I'm putting this in the Fitness section of my blog. Tisk Tisk Kim.
Before you call me crazy, read on :)

Note the bottle of water..so healthy.

I'm a huge fan of YouTube videos and tend to see a lot of beauty gurus and fashionistas create videos related to health and create series of "Get Healthy With Me" videos. That's all fine and well. Workout. Eat right. Indulge on occasion.
I want to know what being unhealthy for someone is.
What about the days you throw out your diet or food rule book out the window. What do you eat? What do you like to enjoy?
I thought I'd share my indulgences in Italy and put a twist on those video ideas in one blog post.
Let's get unhealthy...

If there is one thing you should know about me, it is my love affair with food.
I LOVE to eat.
I am very active: go to the gym, run, swim, and watch what I for the most part.
Although I may be a vegetarian and keep tabs on what I put in my body, that does not mean I eat healthy all the time. I know how to indulge.
My mother could tell you the amount of times she screams at me for being in the kitchen and grabbing a snack or meal or smoothie or bowl of fro-yo.
Like mom, I'm hungry and I like food. Let me live.
The perks of working out is a faster metabolism.
The not so fun part is feeling bad after demolishing an entire pizza like the one above.

But you know what? You have to live a little. I'm all for eating healthy, avoiding bleached flour and bread, eating more vegetables and fruits than anything else, and making sure I eat as best as I can to keep fit.
But on some days, I like to indulge and when I do, go hard or go home.

I have been enjoying a fair share of foods I don't normally eat or choose to eat while back at home. For example, Italian pastries like this Venetian pastry. Heaven.

I can't express how in love I am with gelato. Fro-yo and ice cream step aside.
I found new love.
Cheesecake and cookies and cream gelato on the Ponte? Yes, please.

This panino (fun fact: panini is the plural form) had everything I could ask for in between delicious fresh focaccia: eggplant, tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, zucchini, sun dried tomato paste, and lettuce.
I could not finish this in one sitting but I for sure finished it the same day.

As I have mentioned in my previous study abroad posts, these Nutella pastries are the most delicious thing I will ever have late at night. The bakers are the sweetest ever and make the sweetest desserts to match.

Who would have thought I would be eating kebabs in Italy? Well friends, kebabs are everything when you are starving at 2am. My falafel kebab seems a bit healthier since it is made from chickpeas but I think the fries, cheese, and hot sauce killed that. At least the hot sauce helps it burn a little faster. Haven't had one? Add it to your life bucket list please.

Oh cocktails, how I love thee. I am not a fan of beer since it makes me bloat. Mojitos and deliciously flavored drinks? Huge fan. Although these babies pack on a good amount of calories, I like to make sure to enjoy a good share on a night out with my girlfriends. Let me not mention my love affair with wine.
But it helps you live longer right? (excuses wine fanatics use everywhere)

Check out my last post on how I burn all these delicious calories and stay tuned for more posts :)

My Current Workout Routine + Healthy Smoothie Recipes!

Can it be summer like now? </3
How does one stay fit studying abroad? And studying abroad in a country known for its pizza, wine, cheese, bread...just about everything delicious?

Summer is approaching very soon although it feels like an endless winter.
I thankfully have been dedicating my time to working out and eating healthy while of course indulging while in Italy.

My Current Workout Routine

Running: 20 to 30 minutes
5 minute warm up, light jogging, and then interval sprinting
*I've read that short bursts of sprinting are better than running for the entire time you are on the treadmill*
Yay, for cardio! JK, I don't like it but it helps keeps my legs strong and burn fat.

Weights/Squats
15 to 20 minutes
I am horrible at doing reps and sets. I just count and increase overtime.
I am currently squatting with 20lbs. Hopefully by the time I leave I'll be able to push myself to 50.
I like to do a round of regular squats, plié squats (great for your inner thighs), and curtsy squats.
I want a butt and body like Nicole Mejia or Yovanna Ventura. Look them up on Instagram. I. Love. Them.

Abs/Arms/Leg Workouts/Stretching
10 to 15 minutes
I use Pinterest for Ab workouts. If you need some ab moves or challenges, follow my board here!
My target area? Lower abs and those darn bra bulges.
I normally do a machine or two for arms. I mostly get my arm workout from swimming but since I have no pool, I must succumb to a machine. Le sigh.

I am trying to follow a more rounded routine and learn to utilize reps and better workout methods to tone up and slim down a bit more. Results will follow soon!

Healthy Smoothie Recipes

As of late, I have been trying to incorporate more protein in my diet and also properly fuel and feed my body so that 1) I don't overeat like I love to and 2) incorporate more fruits and veggies. If you're trying to do the same, here are some great recipes!

Here are two of my favorite concoctions!
Just throw these items in a blender, enough for a good cup.
Easy, quick, and super yummy!

Banana Peanut Butter Madness

Vanilla Almond Milk
Banana
1 spoon of peanut butter
Vanilla protein powder (you could do without this. I have yet to find a brand to use religiously)
Ice
A handful of spinach (I promise, you won't taste a thing!)

Berry Awesome

Vanilla Almond Milk
Assortment of frozen berries (raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, etc.)
A handful of spinach
Ice
Vanilla protein powder (Also, could do without)
2 spoons of Honey

Blend and enjoy!

Fall Into A Fitness Challenge

It's finally Fall!
Time for Pumpkin Spice Lattes, Leggings, Chunky Sweaters, food, food, and more food!

Summer is sadly over and so is my free time to focus on working out and wearing bikinis.
I already feel the pounds coming on and they need to go away ASAP.

My eating habits change for the worse once school begins with all those late nights and unsightly options in my dining hall (I'm talking mozzarella sticks, giant cookies, and pints of Ben & Jerry's).

A new month is upon us so I think it's a perfect time to take control of my fitness and eating habits.

I'll be wining and dining in Italy soon enough and I need to save room for those carbs.
So what's my plan?
Apart from fitting in some pool time whenever I can, I'm taking up some fitness challenges and kicking some of my horrid eating habits.

My Goal: Focusing on Abs, Toning My Derriere, and Avoiding Dairy and Sugar

My Celeb Motivation: Jennifer Lopez

My goals for the month are pretty tough but I'm making sure to follow these challenges to stay on track.

Follow my Workout Board on Pinterest for more workouts!

Follow along or find your own fitness challenge!
Either way, just make sure you...

A Woman's Best Accessory? Confidence.

"She thinks she's all that and a bag of chips."
Ever hear that one before?

Damn straight I do. Add a soda too while you're at it!

Just kidding. That phrase always gets me. Yeah, I feel awesome and guess what? That's okay!

In life, we have very few things we can control. To me, self-confidence is definitely one of them.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with flaunting or loving the way you look or feel.

Beyoncé does it, so why can't I?

Society has somehow made us think we are narcissistic or self-absorbed for some reason by doing that. I'm sure it has to do with the whole concept of selfies and likes on basically everything.
Yes, after a certain point, put your phone down and quit doing it so that people will like you more.

Self-confidence isn't finding assurance in others. You need to find assurance in yourself.

I am thankful to have girlfriends who share the same beliefs and aren't afraid to own who they are. They inspire me to do the same.

My dear friend Kylee and I posing at Commencement Ball

Peep Kathy's blog: With love, K.M.

Most of my friends could probably tell you that I am one for dressing up anywhere I go.
Work, school, or even Walmart. Alright, not Walmart maybe Target on a good day.

As Cornelius Lindsey wisely stated,
"If you live off a man's compliments, you'll die from his criticism".

So, you've always wanted to wear a bikini but didn't think you could? Wear it.

Love the look of wearing a bold lip color but never tried it? Try it.

Scared of doing something others will think is weird? Do it anyway.

Who am I looking good for you ask?
Myself, that's who.
(and maybe my potential husband but shh..)

I am not a fan of those who judge others for what they wear and the sort.
I can wear a paper bag if I want to and I will look great in it. Watch me.

I have grown into loving myself more.
I thank my fabulous mother for exuding her own confidence through her style and words. She is never afraid to strike a pose or wear her best and I've learned a lot from that.
I love taking pictures and wearing figure flattering clothing.
If someone doesn't like it, bye.

Ultimately, you have to be happy with who you are and all that you are.
No one else's opinion matters.
(Except your momma's...My momma always knows best)

Like Shay, just remember to werk it <3

Body Image, Weight, and Embracing the Cake

Summer 2010 Stone Harbor, NJ
(I'm 2nd to last on the right)
I love you all, don't kill me for this throwback...

I was definitely never ready for this jelly
(a point for you if you know where that song is from).

Curvy, small waisted, but always a little fuller.

I am what they call "pear-shaped".
Small on top, big on the bottom.

It definitely takes time to get used to your body and I don't think any of us get to a point of fully loving every aspect of our bodies.

I was always the bigger one around my group of friends.
Big hips, dark features, and hair that would be perfect for the 80's.
Unfortunately, it's not the 80's.
My big curly hair, also reminiscent of a lion's mane, must be tamed.

Essentially, I was a total stand out.
And at the time, definitely not in a good way.

High school was interesting to say the least.
I was surrounded by straight-hair and thin bodies that fit into fitted Hollister t-shirts and size 0 Abercrombie jeans.

Did I fit in? Nope.
And I definitely did not fit into those tight, size 0 Abercrombie jeans without ripping those seams and shattering the CEO's ideal customer, that's for sure.

To me, I was the Ugly Betty, the Mia Thermopolis, or the Gracie Lou Freebush before she won Miss Congeniality.
Knowing how to dress and boys liking me were just not my thing.

Thankfully, I lost about 15lbs with the help of Seventeen Magazine and sports, ditched the braces, discovered the power of makeup, and learned how to properly straighten my hair when I didn't feel like wearing my hair au natural or look like I had just walked out of an 80's music video.

Summer 2013

I am now a vegetarian (4 years going strong), sometimes pescatarian (Salmon is da bomb), and active on a daily basis.
I eat healthier, learned how to work out effectively, and keep myself in check (most of the time).
I love to eat and a lot at that. So pizza, cake, cookies, and anything with frosting on it are just a few of my food addictions.
I learned to eat what I want but also make sure I burn it off.
I'd love to have a flat tummy, toned biceps, and slim thighs. Sure, why not. But that's a tad too superficial.
Personally, I would rather feel good about myself and be healthy regardless of what I see on that dreaded scale.
Spring Break 2014

I've learned to embrace the Latina in me and the physical attributes that come with being one.
Before, I wanted to be like Blake Lively or Lauren Conrad. But let's be honest, do I have that body type or hair...um no.
I'd much rather take cues from curvy women like Sofia Vergara or Jennifer Lopez.

It takes time to lose weight, change your habits, and embrace the body you have. But it's worth it.

I will continue to appreciate my body and the "cake", as they call it nowadays, that I was inherited.

My amazing best friend Sarah

But above all, I will forever and always appreciate the existence of chocolate cake just as much, if not more.
